Producer of the Month
Just Fare carries gourmet sauces and spices from South African company Turqle Trading.
Try Zanzibar Island Spice on potatoes or broccoli. It is a wonderful blend of sesame seed, fennel, coriander, black pepper, aniseed, cassia, ginger, clove, star anise, garlic and onion. A tiny bit can perk up any vegetable or pasta dish.
Cape Treasures is another line with relishes and mustards. The flavors of the sauces are developed from real vegetables, “because only real vegetables can hold hands with the flavor of other vegetables and meat.”
Red Onion Relish and Sweet Relish are great on crackers. Sun-Dried Tomato Mustard adds flavor to sandwiches or any thing else you like with mustard. Try it as a dip for pretzels! Here is one satisfied customer's recommendation, “Although this has a strong, coarse-textured mustard component, I also like to use it as an enhancement to a meat entree as you would use a chutney, not just as a condiment for sandwiches.”
Products are manufactured at various factories in the Western Cape - from Wellington and Malmesbury, to Montague Gardens and Westlake. The wire heads and tassles on the Ukuva products are all made in a protected workshop for people with mental disabilities.
Some of the producers are small and semi-rural: the products are made where the vegetables are grown; and some manufacturers are huge. One of the biggest, was small and they grew and grew and grew... eventually, buying out one of the other spice suppliers.
All the salt used all the grinders, come from Khoisan Natural Salt in Veldrift and although the pepper and the spices are imported (spices do not grow in South Africa), they buy local raw materials, bottles, caps, labels, boxes etc. Click here to watch short videos about the harvesting of the sea salt and see the grinder factory.
Turqle is a Guaranteed Fair Trade Organization under the WFTO Guarantee System, which means it has a comprehensive Internal Fair Trade Monitoring System in place including yearly audits and maintaining all the necessary food safety standards and certifications.
Turqle Trading is committed to creating jobs in a country with astounding rates of unemployment. Not only does Turqle Trading provide employment for nearly 500 South Africans, but it encourages them to develop their skills and knowledge through various educational classes such as health care and personal budgeting. These classes enable the employees to better plan for the future of their families and to prepare for unexpected expenses.
